Definition

Under the general supervision of the Environmental Services Supervisor, the Housekeeper II (Custodian) performs a variety of tasks in order to maintain the buildings’ sanitary, orderly, and attractive condition.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or its equivalent.
  • Must be able to read and write written instructions and carry them out effectively.
  • Must be able to work various shifts.
  • One (1) to two (2) year's of recent experience (last five years) as a housekeeper, custodian, or janitor in a health care institution; utilizing industrial cleaning agents preferred.
  • Must be able to lift up to twenty-five (25) pounds of heavy objects as well as operate heavy equipment and endure long hours of continuous physical effort including, standing, stooping, pulling, pushing, and lifting.
  • Requires a valid California driver's license, with at least a three-year verifiable driving history and a driving record that meets West Oakland Health Council's qualifications of a driver in good standing.
  • As a condition of employment, a physical examination and drug-free status is required.

Example Of Duties

  • Provides general housekeeping duties to public and private work areas. These services include:
    • Emptying/cleaning ashtrays, trash baskets (replacing liners, as needed).
    • Vacuuming carpeted areas. Cleaning carpets, as needed
    • Mopping, waxing, buffing, and stripping of tile floors, as needed.
    • Shampooing carpeted areas, as required.
    • Arranging furniture in an orderly fashion.
    • Cleaning/disinfecting all sinks, commodes, urinals, toilet stall doors and similar furnishings/equipment.
    • Replenishing supplies of soap, towels, seat covers, and other disposable items, as needed.
    • Damp dusting furniture, counters, office equipment, and light fixtures, as required.
    • Spot cleaning walls and glass throughout the facility, as needed.
    • Checking periodically to insure that areas within the Health Center are maintained at all times.
    • Removing/replacing any minor inoperable fixtures, i.e., light bulbs, air filters, etc., as needed. Clean light covers, as needed.
    • Grounds maintenance and landscaping.
  • Delivers and moves objects in and about the Health Council facilities.
  • Polices grounds of Council facilities. Picking up debris/sweeping outside walks and entranceways.
  • Is required, when necessary, to serve as a driver for Health Council business and to transport supplies between facilities.
  • Reports any mechanical failures or unsafe conditions as observed to supervisor for corrective action.
  • Provides daily courier service between all facilities.
General Requirements

  • Attends work regularly and punctually; is readily accessible during work hours to peers; limits absences from own duty stations and limits visits and activities which distract others from their performance of duties.
  • Works cooperatively with immediate supervisor, with department members, and with other Council staff persons, as required
  • Treats all patients / clients / visitors with respect and courtesy.
  • Remains competent in skills required for position.
    • During the initial thirty (30) days of employment, becomes and remains knowledgeable about and in compliance with the Council's and Department policies and procedures in the following areas:

  • Maintains a working knowledge about and in continued compliance with all of those areas listed under item (5) throughout your employment with the Council.
  • Provides Services appropriate to the age of the patients/ clients/ visitors served
  • Is able to work and/or interact satisfactorily with a workforce and public, which is ethnically and culturally diverse.
  • Is responsible for performing other assigned duties which are related to the above within the scope of this job description
  • This position falls under an exclusive bargaining agreement with Health Care Workers' Union Local 250, SEIU, AFL-CIO; and requires employee membership.
